Cornus Elegantissima, also known as ‘Red-Barked Dogwood’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit is a medium sized, fast growing, deciduous shrub with its red stems bringing an all year round interest to the garden. The masses of ovate green with creamy variegated leaves almost hide the scented creamy white small flower heads produced during May and June. A good pollinator, and whilst not very showy, these flowers do attract the butterflies and other insects, followed later in the season by blue tinged white berries, a great attraction to the birds in the garden. As Autumn approaches the leaves turn various shades of yellow and orange before falling to reveal its bright red slender stems providing plenty of colour for the Winter border.
Looking After Your Cornus Elegantissima
Cornus are very low maintenance and generally disease free shrubs. Although they may be affected by aphids during the Summer months, these Cornus will tolerate a wide range of soil conditions but do prefer a moist, well drained situation in full sun or partial shade.
