Acacia Retinodes, commonly known as the Swamp Wattle, is an evergreen tree or large shrub native to Australia. It is renowned for its graceful, weeping habit and ability to produce fragrant, golden-yellow flowers throughout much of the year, making it one of the few Acacias with an extended blooming period.
Reaching heights of 4 to 8 metres, Acacia Retinodes features long, narrow, willow-like leaves that give it a soft, airy appearance. Its spherical flower clusters, rich in nectar, attract bees and other pollinators, adding ecological value to gardens.
This species thrives in a variety of conditions, from moist to well drained soils and it prefers full sun but will need some protection in the colder months.
With its low-maintenance nature, extended flowering, and adaptability, Acacia Retinodes is a valuable addition to gardens looking for year-round greenery and seasonal bursts of colour.
How to care for your Acacia Retinodes
- Prefers a sunny position for optimal growth and flowering. Tolerates a wide range of soils, from moist to dry, but thrives in well-drained soil.
- Water regularly when young to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, requiring minimal watering. Can tolerate wet soils, making it suitable for rain gardens or flood-prone areas.
- Apply a low-phosphorus fertiliser in early Spring to support healthy growth. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Minimal pruning is needed, but occasional light pruning helps maintain shape. Remove any dead or damaged branches to encourage new growth. If grown as a hedge or screen, trim lightly after flowering to keep it dense.
- Will require protection in the colder months. If growing in a container, consider moving to a protected spot during extreme cold.
With its low-maintenance nature, fast growth, and extended flowering, Acacia Retinodes is a fantastic choice for adding year-round greenery and colour to the garden.
