Sycopsis Sinensis, also known as ‘Chinese Sycopsis’  is a large semi evergreen shrub native to eastern Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Taiwan. It is a member of the family Hamamelidaceae, which also includes other popular garden plants such as Witch Hazels.

This plant typically grows up to 8 metres tall, with a rounded or spreading habit. Its leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to lanceolate, and measure around 5-20cms in length. The leaves are typically a glossy green colour, turning yellow or reddish-purple in the Autumn.

One of the most striking features of this variety is its flowers. In Spring, short clusters of felted brown buds open to reveal flowers without petals that have small clusters of yellow , red-anthered stamens which have a sweet, spicy fragrance.

This is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and parks due to its attractive flowers and interesting foliage. It prefers a well-drained soil in partial shade to full sun and is tolerant of a range of soil types. It is also relatively pest and disease-free, making it a low-maintenance plant.

In summary, this is a small tree or shrub native to eastern Asia with attractive bell-shaped flowers, interesting foliage, and a range of medicinal uses. It is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and parks and is relatively low-maintenance.

How to care for your Sycopsis Sinensis

  • Location: Prefers partial shade to full sun. It is important to avoid planting it in areas with strong, direct sunlight as this can cause leaf scorching. Choose a well-drained soil for planting.
  • Watering: Water the plant regularly, especially during the first few years of growth, to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, but it still benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from regular fertilisation. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early Spring or late Autumn. Alternatively, you can use a balanced liquid fertiliser every two to three weeks during the growing season.
  • Pruning: Pruning is not strictly necessary, but it can be beneficial for shaping and controlling its size. Prune the plant in late Winter or early Spring before new growth appears. Remove any dead or diseased wood, and trim back any unwanted growth.
  • Mulching: Mulching around the base of the plant can help conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. Use a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or shredded leaves.

Overall, Sycopsis Sinensis is a relatively low-maintenance plant that is easy to care for with a little attention to its basic needs. By providing it with the right growing conditions and regular care, you can enjoy the beauty of its attractive flowers and foliage for years to come.
