Spiraea Goldflame, commonly known as ‘Japanese Spiraea’, is a deciduous shrub known for its vibrant, changing foliage and beautiful Summer blooms. It typically grows to about 1 metre tall and wide, forming a neat, rounded shape. The foliage emerges in Spring with a striking bronze-red hue, gradually transitioning to a bright golden yellow as the season progresses, and eventually deepening to green in the Summer.
During mid to late Summer, it produces clusters of small, pinkish-purple flowers that contrast beautifully with the foliage. These blooms attract pollinators like butterflies, making it a delightful addition to garden beds or borders. In the Autumn, the leaves turn a rich red or orange, adding a final burst of colour before the plant goes dormant for the Winter.
This Spiraea is relatively low-maintenance, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It’s drought-tolerant once established and is often used in landscapes for its colourful, year-round interest and ease of care.
How to care for your Spiraea Goldflame
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. The plant can tolerate a range of soil pH levels but prefers a slightly acidic soil. If the soil is heavy or clay-like, consider adding some compost or other organic matter to improve drainage and fertility.
- Sunlight: The plant thrives in full sun or partial shade. It requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day to grow and bloom properly.
- Watering: Requires moderate watering, especially during the summer months. Water the plant deeply when the soil is dry to the touch, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot.
- Fertiliser: You can fertilise with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early Spring when new growth emerges. Avoid over-fertilising as this can lead to excessive growth and a less attractive appearance.
- Pruning: Pruning is necessary to maintain the plant’s shape and encourage new growth. Prune the plant in late Winter or early Spring before new growth emerges. Cut back any dead, damaged or diseased branches, and shape the plant to your desired size.
- Mulching: Adding a layer of mulch around the base of the plant can help to retain moisture in the soil and suppress weeds.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your Spiraea Goldflame thrives and provides you with beautiful red foliage and pink flowers year after year.
