Pittosporum Silver Sheen, commonly known as ‘Kohuhu’ is an evergreen, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree of upright, rounded habit. The dark brown to black stems compliment the small, round, silvery green leaves which create a shimmering effect in a slight breeze. During late Spring-early Summer fragrant purple-black, bell shaped flowers appear in clusters, highly prized by the local wild-life in particular the bee population. These are then followed in the Autumn by dark purple-black fruits. Pittosporum make an ideal hedging or specimen plant, suitable also for coastal planting.
Looking After Your Pittosporum Silver Sheen
Pittosporum are generally pest and disease free, although may be affected by leaf spot or mildew. An easy to care for plant and suitable to grow in many if not all locations, prefers a sunny position which also helps to encourage flower production, the sunnier the more flowers, and although frost hardy some winter protection may be required from the coldest of winds. Very little pruning is necessary and any shaping or removal of dead/damaged branches should ideally be done after flowering. The use of a good general purpose fertiliser is also recommended in early Spring to encourage the fresh new growth.
