Phormium Yellow Wave, also known as ‘New Zealand Flax’, holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a small neat, clump forming, evergreen perennial, providing year round colour and interest for the garden. The sword or strap like arching foliage is boldly striped bright yellow and lime green, making this an ideal structural plant for the border, providing both height and colour, equally suitable for patio or container planting. During long hot Summers the more mature plant will produce panicles of tubular small shaped reddish flowers on tall erect stems towering above the plentiful foliage.

Looking After Your Phormium Yellow Wave

Generally disease free, a low maintenance and easy to grow evergreen garden perennial in many if not all locations, from the informal cottage style planting schemes to the more formal town/city or coastal gardens, preferring a sunny or partially shaded area of the garden away from any very cold and drying Winter winds, an ideal plant for the sunny border adding both height and colour. A moist, well drained, fertile soil will ensure you have a healthy and happy perennial. Very little if any pruning required, although do remove any dead or damaged leaves during late Spring. Mulch with a well rotted garden compost to help retain any moisture during the drier Summer months and apply a good quality general purpose fertiliser to stimulate plenty of fresh new growth.
