Phalaris Arundinacea Feesey, commonly known as ‘Gardeners Garters’, is a species of grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is a grass native to Europe, but has been widely introduced in North America and other parts of the world.

Phalaris Feesey is an upright grass that typically grows to a height of 1-1.5 metres with a spread of 2 metres. The leaves are long and narrow, and are striped lengthways with a rich green and cream colour.  They grow in a clump-like form, with new growth emerging from the centre of the plant.

The flowers of this Phalaris are produced in large, dense panicles that grow up to 30 cm long. The panicles are initially green, but as they mature, they turn pale purple in colour. They appear in mid-Summer and last until early Autumn, providing a beautiful and long-lasting display.

This is a popular ornamental grass, often used in gardens and landscaping for its attractive appearance and easy-to-grow nature. It is particularly well-suited for use as a backdrop or accent plant in mixed borders, as it provides a strong vertical element and contrasts well with other plants.

How to care for Phalaris Arundinacea Feesey

  • Sun and Soil Requirements :  This plant prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. However, it is adaptable and can tolerate a variety of soil conditions.
  • Watering: It is moderately drought tolerant, but it requires regular watering during periods of extended dryness. It is best to water deeply and infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  • Fertilisation: Fertilisation is not typically required, but a light application of a balanced fertiliser in early Spring can help promote healthy growth and flowering.
  • Pruning: This plant does not require pruning, but it may benefit from occasional thinning to prevent overcrowding and maintain its shape. Cut back any dead or damaged growth in early Spring before new growth emerges.
  • Winter Care: It is hardy and can survive in colder climates, but it may benefit from a layer of mulch to protect the roots during the Winter months.
  • Propagation: It can be propagated by division in the Spring or Autumn. Dig up the clump and separate it into smaller sections, replanting each section in a new location.

By following these simple care instructions, you can ensure that your Phalaris Arundinacea Feesey remains healthy, vibrant, and attractive year-round.
