Perovskia Blue Spire, also known as ‘Russian Sage’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the family Lamiaceae. It is highly valued for its long-lasting blooms, aromatic foliage, and drought tolerance.
Perovskia Blue Spire has a bushy, upright habit and can grow up to 1.5 metres in height and 1 metre in width. The plant has silvery-green, lance-shaped leaves that are highly aromatic and give off a pleasant fragrance when touched. The leaves are deeply divided and have a feathery appearance. The flowers of Perovskia Blue Spire are small, tubular, and light blue or lavender in colour. They grow in long, spiky clusters at the top of the stems and bloom from mid-Summer to early Autumn. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Perovskia Blue Spire thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining soil that is moderately fertile. The plant is drought tolerant once established and can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. It is hardy and can tolerate temperatures as low as -15°C.
This Perovskia is an excellent choice for mixed borders, rock gardens, and cottage gardens. It adds a beautiful, silvery texture to any garden and attracts pollinators. The plant is also suitable for container gardening, and its tall, upright habit makes it an ideal choice for back-of-the-border planting.
How to care for your Perovskia Blue Spire
- Sun and soil: Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. The plant prefers soil that is moderately fertile, but it can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
- Watering: It is drought tolerant once established. Water the plant deeply and infrequently during the growing season, and allow the soil to dry out slightly between watering. During hot, dry weather, the plant may require more frequent watering.
- Fertilisation: Does not require regular fertilisation. However, if the plant is not growing well or if the soil is poor, you can apply a balanced fertiliser or a slow-release fertiliser according to the instructions on the packaging.
- Pruning: Should be pruned back in the Autumn to about 15cm from the ground to prevent damage from Winter weather. In the Spring, remove any dead or damaged wood, and cut back the plant to promote bushier growth and more abundant blooms.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. This will also help to suppress weed growth around the plant.
By following these care tips, you can ensure that your Perovskia Blue Spire will thrive and provide you with years of beautiful blooms and foliage.
