Lysimachia Golden Alexander, also known as ‘Yellow Loosestrife’,  is an upright, clump forming architectural plant which belongs to the Primrose family.  It grows to a height of approximately 60cm, with a spread of about the same. The plant has an upright growth habit, with stiff, sturdy stems that are covered with lance-shaped leaves. The leaves are variegated with bold creamy-yellow margins and remain attractive all season.

The flowers are produced in clusters at the top of the stem in mid-late Summer, are cup shaped and golden yellow in colour.  Theyhave a distinctive fragrance that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies and are followed by small, round seed capsules that contain numerous tiny seeds.

This is an attractive and easy-to-grow plant that can add colour and interest to a wide range of garden settings. Its bright yellow flowers and interesting foliage make it a popular choice among gardeners, and its adaptability to various growing conditions makes it a valuable addition to any landscape.

How to care for your Lysimachia Golden Alexander

  • Watering: Prefers moist to wet soil conditions. Water the plant regularly during the growing season, especially during periods of drought. However, be careful not to overwater the plant, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise once a year in the Spring using a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. This will provide the plant with the nutrients it needs to promote healthy growth and flowering.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as bark chips or shredded leaves, around the base of the plant. This will help to retain moisture in the soil and suppress weed growth.
  • Pruning: Does not require regular pruning. However, you can deadhead the spent flowers to encourage the plant to produce more blooms. Cut the flower stems back to just above a leaf node.
  • Dividing: Over time, it can become crowded and may benefit from division. This should be done in the Spring or Autumn. Dig up the plant and carefully separate the roots into smaller clumps, making sure each clump has a few healthy shoots. Replant the divisions in a well-draining soil.

With proper care, the Lysimachia Golden Alexander will reward you with a beautiful display of bright yellow flowers and variegated foliage for years to come
