Lobelia Bees Flame, commonly known as just ‘Lobelia’, is known for its striking, fiery-red flowers that bloom in the Summer. This plant is a hybrid of two different Lobelia species, Lobelia Cardinalis and Lobelia Siphilitica, and was first introduced in the early 2000s.
The Lobelia Bees Flame plant grows to a height of around 1 metre and has a spread of about 50 cm and produces a clump of narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are a dark green colour and are approximately 7.5 cm long. The flowers are arranged in dense spikes that rise above the foliage and are about 15 cm long. The individual flowers are tubular in shape, and have a vibrant, bright red colour that appears to glow in the sunlight.
This Lobelia is a popular choice among gardeners and landscaping professionals because of its stunning blooms and its ability to attract pollinators, especially bees and butterflies. This plant thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-draining soil.
How to care for your Lobelia Bees Flame
- Location: It prefers to be grown in full sun to partial shade. It is important to choose a location with well-draining soil that is kept consistently moist. Avoid planting this plant in areas that are prone to water logging, as this can cause root rot.
- Watering: This plant prefers consistently moist soil, so it is important to water it deeply and regularly, especially during hot, dry periods. However, be careful not to overwater, as this can also cause root rot.
- Fertiliser: Benefits from a light application of fertiliser in the Spring. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser and follow the instructions on the label.
- Pruning: May benefit from being cut back by one-third to one-half in the late Summer to promote bushier growth. Pruning can also help to encourage the plant to produce more flowers.
With the right conditions, this plant can thrive and produce beautiful, vibrant blooms that are sure to attract pollinators to your garden.
