Ligustrum Lemon and Lime, commonly known as ‘Privet’, is a small compact evergreen shrub with oval shaped glossy leaves that have margins of golden yellow.  This striking foliage provides a beautiful contrast to the darker green leaves of other shrubs and trees in the garden, and can add a bright pop of colour to any landscape. The plant has a compact, rounded habit, and grows to a height of around 2.5 metres, with a similar spread.

In the late Spring and early Summer, it produces small, white, tubular flowers that are highly fragrant and attract bees and other pollinators to the garden. These are followed by small, blue-black berries that are attractive to birds, but not edible for humans.

Ligustrum Lemon and Lime is a versatile plant that can be used in a variety of ways in the garden. It is often used as a low hedge or border plant, as well as in mixed shrub borders, foundation plantings, or as a specimen plant. It is also well-suited for container gardening and can be used to add colour and interest to patios and decks.

In summary, Ligustrum Lemon and Lime is a dwarf evergreen shrub with variegated foliage that provides a bright pop of color in the garden. It is easy to grow and maintain, and produces highly fragrant flowers in the spring and early summer. It is a versatile plant that can be used in a variety of ways in the garden, and is an excellent choice for low hedges, mixed borders, foundation plantings, or as a specimen plant.

How to care for your Ligustrum Lemon and Lime

  • Watering: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but can tolerate periods of drought once established. Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells, and avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Be careful not to overwater the plant, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: This plant is not too picky about soil, but it does prefer well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral in pH. If the soil in your garden is heavy and clay-like, consider adding some organic matter, such as compost or aged manure, to improve drainage and fertility.
  • Fertilisation: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in the Spring and Summer, following the instructions on the package. Be careful not to over-fertilise, as this can cause the plant to produce too much new growth, which can be weak and vulnerable to pests and diseases.
  • Pruning: It is a average growing plant that does not require frequent pruning, but it can be shaped and tidied up as needed. Prune in the late Winter or early Spring, before new growth appears, to encourage bushy growth and remove any dead or damaged branches.
  • Propagation: It can be propagated from cuttings taken in the Summer, or from seed. Take 4-inch cuttings from the tips of healthy branches, strip off the lower leaves, and dip the cut end in rooting hormone. Plant the cuttings in moist potting soil and keep them in a warm, humid location until roots form. Once the cuttings have rooted, they can be transplanted into larger pots or into the garden.
