Leptospermum Nanum Kiwi, also known as ‘Tea Tree’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit is a captivating and compact evergreen shrub that belongs to the Myrtaceae family. This delightful cultivar is a variation of the larger Leptospermum Scoparium and is cherished for its charming appearance, unique foliage, and abundance of dainty flowers.

This variety typically forms a small, rounded mound, reaching a height of approximately 1 metre with a similar spread.  Its compact and bushy growth habit makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, rockeries, or containers. The petite size of this cultivar also makes it suitable for use as an eye-catching ground cover, adding interest and texture to various landscape designs.

The foliage of this Leptospermum is a standout feature. The tiny, needle-like leaves emerge with a captivating coppery-red colour, creating an attractive contrast against the mature glossy green foliage. This two-toned effect lends year-round visual interest and brings a touch of uniqueness to the landscape.

During the flowering season, which typically occurs in late Spring to early Summer it bursts into a profusion of small, delicate flowers. The blooms showcase charming white petals with a subtle pink blush, creating a soft and alluring display against the vibrant foliage. Besides their aesthetic appeal, the flowers also attract beneficial pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly gardens.

Whether used as a focal point in a small garden, an attractive ground cover, or a charming addition to containers, this is sure to captivate and enhance any outdoor space. Its compact size, stunning foliage, and abundant flowers make it a delightful and versatile ornamental shrub that will bring joy and beauty to your landscape year-round.

How to care for your Leptospermum Nanum Kiwi

  • Location: Plant in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade. It thrives in bright sunlight, which promotes better flowering and foliage coloration. Avoid areas with extreme heat or prolonged exposure to harsh, scorching sunlight.
  • Soil: Provide well-draining soil.  Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils, as they can lead to root rot. This plant can tolerate slightly acidic to neutral soil pH levels.
  • Watering: While this variety is drought-tolerant once established, it’s crucial to water it regularly during its initial establishment phase. Afterward, water the shrub during dry spells or extended periods without rainfall. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering during the Winter months when the plant is dormant.
  • Pruning: Regular pruning is not often necessary especially if you want to maintain its natural, compact shape. However, you can trim the plant lightly after flowering to shape it and remove any dead or damaged growth. Pruning can be done in late spring or early summer.
  • Fertilisation: Generally does not require heavy fertilisation. However, if you notice poor growth or lack of blooms, you can apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in Spring. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.
  • Winter Protection: In colder regions or during harsh Winters, you may need to protect the plant from freezing temperatures. Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub can help insulate the roots and protect them from cold damage.

By following these care guidelines, you can enjoy a healthy and thriving Leptospermum Nanum Kiwi that will reward you with its beautiful foliage and charming flowers throughout the growing season.
