Iris Pseudacorus, also known as ‘Yellow Flag Iris’, is a popular and hardy perennial plant that is prized for its beautiful bright yellow flowers and ability to thrive in wet or damp soil conditions. This plant is native to Europe and Asia, and is often used in water gardens, as a marginal plant along the edges of ponds and streams.

Iris Pseudacorus grows to a height and width of 1.5 metres, and produces large, fragrant yellow flowers that are held on tall stems above the foliage. The foliage is also attractive, with long, sword-like leaves that are green in colour.

How to care for your Iris Pseudacorous

  • Planting: It should be planted in a location with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It can tolerate a wide range of soil types, but prefers a slightly acidic soil.
  • Watering: It is tolerant of both drought and wet conditions, but it prefers moist soil. Water the plant regularly during the growing season, and reduce watering in the Autumn and Winter. Do not allow the soil to become waterlogged, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser once a month during the growing season to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms. Do not fertilise during the Winter, when the plant is dormant.
  • Pruning: Cut back the leaves of the Iris in the Autumn, after the first hard frost, to prevent disease and insects from overwintering in the leaves. Cut the leaves to about 10cms above the ground.
  • Division: Divide every 3-4 years to maintain its health and vigour. This is best done in the Autumn, after the leaves have yellowed and died back. Carefully dig up the plant, divide the clumps of rhizomes into smaller sections, and replant them in well-draining soil.

By following these care guidelines, your Iris Pseudacorus should thrive and produce stunning blooms year after year.
