Iris Kaempferi Snow Queen, commonly known as ‘Japanese Water Iris’ is a stunning and highly sought-after hybrid Iris variety that is prized for its beautiful white flowers and elegant form. This plant is a hybrid of the Japanese Iris species, Iris Kaempferi, and is known for its hardiness and adaptability.

Iris Kaempferi Snow Queen is a herbaceous perennial that grows to a height of 1 metres and a spread of 1/2 metre. This plant is best known for its large, ruffled white flowers that have a delicate and refined appearance. The foliage is also attractive, with green leaves that are narrow and sword-like in shape.

How to care for your Iris Snow Queen

  • Planting: Plant in a well-draining soil in a sunny or partially shady location. Space the plants 18-24 inches apart. It is best to plant the iris in the spring, after the last frost has passed.
  • Watering: During the growing season, water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering in the Autumn, and stop watering completely in Winter, as the Iris goes dormant.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Do not fertilise during the Winter, when the plant is dormant.
  • Pruning: Cut back the leaves in the Autumn, after the first hard frost, to prevent disease and insects from overwintering in the leaves. Cut the leaves to about 10cms above the ground.
  • Division: Divide the Iris every 3-4 years to maintain its health and vigour. This is best done in the Autumn, after the leaves have yellowed and died back. Carefully dig up the plant, divide the clumps of rhizomes into smaller sections, and replant them in well-draining soil.

By following these care guidelines, your Iris Kaempferi Snow Queen should thrive and produce stunning blooms year after year.
