Hebe Vernicosa, also known as ‘Varnished Hebe’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is an evergreen shrub species that is native to New Zealand. It is known for its stunning foliage and its ability to provide year-round interest in the landscape.

This shrub was first introduced to cultivation in the late 19th century and has since become a popular choice for gardeners and landscapers. Hebe Vernicosa can grow up to 1/2 metre tall and 1 1/2 metres wide, with a rounded, spreading habit. It produces tiny white or very pale blue flowers in early Summer, but its real showstopper is its foliage, which is a glossy green colour with a striking, variegated appearance.  It is easy to care for, being drought-tolerant once established, and does not require frequent pruning and is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add year-round interest to their landscape and is a great option for rock gardens, as a border shrub, or as a specimen plant.

How to care for your Hebe Vernicosa

• Planting: Choose a location with well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Plant the shrub in the Spring or Autumn, allowing for proper root establishment.
• Watering: Water regularly after planting and during dry spells, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. Once established, is drought-tolerant and does not require frequent watering.
• Soil: Prefers well-draining soil and tolerates a variety of soil types, from sandy to clay.

• Fertilising: Fertilise the shrub in early Spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser.
