Hamamelis x intermedia Ruby Glow, also known as ‘Witch Hazel’ is a deciduous shrub that is known for its beautiful, fragrant, deep red-orange flowers that bloom in late Winter to early Spring. The flowers are produced before the leaves appear, providing a colourful show in the garden during a time when other plants are still dormant.

The flowers have a spidery appearance and have a strong, spicy fragrance and the leaves are dark green, glossy, and turn yellow and orange in Autumn.  It can grow up to 4 metres tall and wide, but can also be pruned to maintain a smaller size.  It prefers full sun to partial shade and can grow in a variety of soil types, as long as it is well-drained.

Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Ruby Glow’ is an excellent choice for adding colour and fragrance to the garden during the Winter months. Its deep red-orange flowers and glossy leaves make it a valuable addition to any garden. It can be grown as a specimen plant, in groups or as a hedge.

How to care for your Hamamelis Ruby Glow

Location:  Choose a well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Witch hazels prefer moist but not waterlogged soil.  Select a location with partial shade to full sun. While they can tolerate some shade, they bloom best in full sun.

Watering:  Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season. Water deeply and regularly to ensure the root zone remains adequately hydrated.  Mulch around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Fertilisation:  Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early Spring before new growth begins. Follow the package instructions for the appropriate dosage.

Pruning:  Prune your witch hazel after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches.  Remove suckers or shoots emerging from the base to maintain a tidy appearance.  Regular pruning is not necessary, but occasional maintenance will help improve air circulation.

Winter Care:  Mulch around the base of the plant in late fall to protect the roots from extreme cold temperatures.  Consider wrapping the branches with burlap if your region experiences harsh winters to prevent winter burn.
