Geum Pink Petticoats, commonly known as ‘Avens’ and a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is a delightful and long-flowering perennial that brings soft, romantic charm to borders and cottage-style gardens. This lovely variety produces a profusion of ruffled blooms in shades of soft blush pink, each flower resembling layers of delicate petticoats gently fluttering in the breeze.

Blooming generously from late Spring well into Summer, it holds its blooms elegantly above a tidy clump of bright green, slightly hairy foliage, adding a fresh splash of colour even when not in flower. Each flower is carried on slender, wiry stems that give the plant an airy, informal feel — perfect for weaving through mixed borders or planting in drifts.

Compact and easy to grow, they typically reach up to 50 cm tall, making it ideal for front-of-border planting, containers, or path edges where its blooms can be fully appreciated. Loved by bees and pollinators, it’s a reliable performer that repeats blooms if deadheaded regularly.

Tough and unfussy, this Geum thrives in full sun or partial shade and enjoys well-drained soil that doesn’t dry out completely. Combining charm, durability, and months of pretty colour, ‘Pink Petticoats’ is a graceful choice for any flower garden.

How to care for your Geum Pink Petticoats

  • Sunlight: Plant ‘in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate some shade, it generally performs best with at least six hours of sunlight per day.
  • Soil: Ensure the soil is well-drained and fertile. Geum prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil with good drainage. Amending heavy clay soil with organic matter, such as compost, can improve drainage and fertility.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry, especially during hot and dry periods. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Fertilisation: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early Spring as new growth emerges. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flower production.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming throughout the season. This also helps maintain the plant’s appearance and prevents self-seeding, as some Geum varieties can be prolific seeders.
  • Dividing: Every few years, divide mature clumps to rejuvenate the plant and promote better flowering. This is typically done in early Spring or early Autumn. Lift the plant carefully, divide the clump into smaller sections, and replant them in well-prepared soil.
  • Winter Care: In colder climates, provide a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in late Autumn to help insulate the roots during Winter. In regions with harsh Winters, consider applying a protective layer of straw or evergreen boughs over the plant to prevent frost damage.

By following these care guidelines, you can enjoy the beauty of Geum Pink Petticoats  year after year, enhancing your garden with its vibrant blooms and lush foliage.
