Ficus Carica Ice Crystal, also known as ‘Fig’ and holder of the much covdted RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a unique and striking variety of the fig tree, known for its distinctive foliage that are deeply lobed and turn yellow in the Autumn. It has insignificant green flowers in late Spring and early Summer which are followed by edible, dark purple fruit.
Ficus is native to the Western Asia and Eastern Mediterranean regions and has been cultivated for thousands of years for its delicious fruit. It is also a popular ornamental plant in many parts of the world. The ‘Ice Crystal’ cultivar is prized for its unique leaf coloration, adding an interesting and eye-catching contrast to any indoor space.
How to care for your Ficus Ice Crystal
- Light: Prefers full sun or bright, indirect light. It is best to place the plant in a location where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Watering: Prefers well-drained soil, and it should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. It’s important to not over-water the plant as it will lead to root rot.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. A commercial potting mix formulated for fruit trees or a mixture of equal parts peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite is ideal.
- Fertiliser: It will benefit from regular fertilisation during the growing season. Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks.
- Pruning: It does not require regular pruning, but it can be shaped and pruned to control its size. Prune it back in the Winter or early Spring.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your Ficus Carica Ice Crystal will thrive and produce delicious figs for years to come.
