Ficus Brown Turkey, also known as ‘Fig’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit is known for its large, sweet, and juicy fruit. It is a self fertile deciduous tree that can grow up to 4 metres tall, but can also be grown as a container plant and kept at a smaller size. The leaves are large, glossy, and dark green with white flowers produced in early Summer which are then followed by fruit that is a deep purple-brown colour when ripe.
This Ficus is native to the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for thousands of years. The fig tree is mentioned in several ancient texts, including the Bible and the Quran, and it is believed to have been one of the first plants to be domesticated by humans. The fig tree has played an important role in human history and culture, and it is still a popular fruit tree today.
Ficus Brown Turkey is a great choice for home gardens, orchards and even as indoor plants as it is a hardy and easy-to-grow variety. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, and can be grown in full sun. The tree is often grown for its sweet, juicy fruit which is usually ready to harvest in late Summer or early Autumn. It can also be grown as an ornamental plant, thanks to its large glossy leaves.
How to care for your Ficus Brown
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate low light conditions. It is best to place the plant in a location where it will receive at least 4 hours of indirect sunlight per day.
- Watering: Prefers to be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Be sure to empty the saucer under the pot after watering to prevent water from sitting in the bottom and causing root rot.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining soil that is high in organic matter. A commercial potting mix formulated for indoor plants is ideal, or you can make your own by mixing equal parts peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite.
- Fertiliser: It is not a heavy feeder, but it will benefit from regular fertilisation. Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
- Pruning: Does not require regular pruning, but it can be shaped and pruned to control its size. If you want to keep it small, prune it back in the Winter or early Spring.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your Ficus ‘Brown Turkey’ will thrive and add a beautiful touch to your outdoor or indoor space.
