Fatsia Japonica, also known as the ‘Castor Oil Plant’ and holder of the coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a lush, evergreen shrub that is native to Japan and Korea. It is a member of the Araliaceae family and can grow up to 4 metres in its natural habitat. This plant has large, glossy, palmate leaves that can reach up to 40 cm wide and can be a striking addition to any landscape. It is also known for its large, clusters of small, white, star-shaped flowers that bloom in the Autumn.

This Fatsia has been cultivated for centuries in Japan and was first introduced to Europe in the 19th century. It is a popular choice for gardens in warm climates and is often used as a specimen plant or as a hedge. It is also a popular indoor plant and can be grown in containers.

How to care for your Fatsia Japonica

  1. Location: Prefers partial shade and does well in areas with dappled or filtered sunlight. It is not tolerant of full sun and may burn or dry out if exposed to too much direct sunlight.
  2. Soil: Prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, you may need to amend it with compost or other organic matter to improve drainage.
  3. Watering: Prefers to be consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch of soil is dry.
  4. Fertiliser: It benefits from regular feeding with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season.
  5. Pruning: It may require occasional pruning to control its size or shape. Prune in the late winter or early spring before new growth appears.

By following these tips you will be able to keep your Fatsia Japonica healthy and looking beautiful for many years to come.
