Escallonia Apple Blossom, a recipient of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit is a multi stemmed, evergreen flowering shrub, often used to form a hedge, a very versatile plant, both sun loving and drought tolerant, also quite happy in coastal areas. The small dark green, shiny leaves providing a strong backdrop for it’s masses of fragrant, tubular pink, often tinged white tubular flowers produced over an extended period throughout the Summer months. An excellent pollinator attracting a huge variety of butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects to the garden. Suitable for an informal flowering hedge or for the mixed border.
Looking After Your Escallonia Apple Blossom
Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow Summer flowering ornamental shrub in many if not all locations. A low maintenance plant which will benefit from a sunny area in all types of garden from the informal cottage planting schemes to the more formal town courtyard or coastal gardens. Escallonia will tolerate most soils as long as they are well drained, once planted apply a generous mulch of well rotted garden compost or multi purpose fertiliser around it’s base. Dead head regularly to prolong flowering, mid-late Spring remove any dead or damaged branches and prune to maintain shape and height, although a hardy shrub some protection may be needed from the coldest, drying Winter winds.
