Cyrtomium Fortunei, also known as ‘Fortunes Cyrtomium’, is the holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, and is a clump forming, semi evergreen fern with bright green leathery fronds and distinctive black stems. Sometimes known as the Holly Fern due to the distinctive shape of the fronds. This fern has an upright habit and looks especially attractive among other ferns or woodland plants in a shaded area.
Looking After Your Cyrtomium Fortunei
Generally pest and disease free, although may be troubled by slugs/snails or caterpillars (easily treated). Ferns are moisture loving plants preferring a shady spot within the garden, if grown in sunnier aspects keeping the soil moist, but well drained is a must at all times, planting in a humus rich soil. Late Autumn tidy by removing all dead or dying fronds and apply a good mulch of well rotted garden compost/leaf mould, this will also help protect the fern in the colder Winter months. Apply a good feed of bone meal or good quality general purpose fertiliser. Propagation or relocation can also be done early Spring.
