Corylus Contorta, also known as ‘Corkscrew Hazel’ or ‘Harry Lauders Walking Stick’ is a holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a deciduous small garden tree.  It has twisted and contorted branches which provide a stunning feature to any garden.  During early Spring its heart shaped, twisted, mid-green toothed leaves are formed and contorted around its branches.  These are then followed by small edible nuts and distinctive yellow catkins, or lambs tails, a great attraction to much of our garden wild-life.

Looking After Your Corylus  Contorta

Generally pest and disease free, although may be affected by caterpillars or aphids, the Corylus Contorta is an easy to grow ornamental, deciduous small tree or large shrub in many if not all locations. A low maintenance plant which can benefit from a sunny or partially shaded area in all types of garden.  Plant in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil, feeding with a good quality general purpose fertiliser in early Spring to encourage strong, fresh new growth in the coming season, at the same time pruning out any straight growing suckers and removing any damaged or unwanted branches.
