Cornus Sibirica, also known as ‘Siberian Dogwood’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a fast growing deciduous shrub producing a dense thicket of upright slender, bright red stems giving year round interest to the garden. The masses of dark oval shaped green leaves almost hide the abundance of small creamy white flowers produced during May and June, whilst not very showy they do make an ideal pollinator attracting the butterflies and other wildlife to the garden. Towards the Autumn the leaves begin to change from dark green through to orange-red and purple, then falling to reveal the brightness of its red Winter stems.
Looking After Your Cornus Sibirica
Cornus are very low maintenance and generally disease free, although may be affected by aphids during the Summer. They will tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, but do prefer a moist well drained situation in full sun or partial shade, producing the most brightest of coloured stems when grown in full sun. Cut hard back in Spring to promote good strong growth and stem colour, feeding with a good rotted garden compost or general purpose fertiliser.
