Cornus Sibirica Variegata, also known as ‘Red-barked Dogwood’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit is a vigorous, deciduous shrub forming a dense thicket of slender red stems, providing excellent Winter colour. Its variegated foliage almost hide the abundance of small creamy-white scented flowers produced during May and June, whilst not very showy they do make an ideal pollinator attracting the butterflies and other pollinators to the garden. These flowers are later followed by bluish/white berries, another valuable addition to the wild-life larder. Towards the Autumn, the green variegated cream foliage begins to change through various shades of pink and red before falling to reveal its slender bright red stems.
Looking After Your Cornus Sibirica Variegata
Cornus tend to be a very low maintenance, plant and generally pest free, although may be affected by Aphids during the summer months. Cornus will tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, but do prefer a moist, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade, producing the brightest of coloured stems when planted in full sun. Cut hard back in Spring to promote good strong healthy growth and stem colour, feeding with a well rotted garden compost or general purpose fertiliser.
