Chaenomeles Superba Crimson and Gold, also known as the ‘Flowering Japanese Quince’, is a recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. It is a deciduous, compact, fast growing dense shrub with spiny arching branches. Its simple ovate leaves emerge slightly bronze and then turn to dark green as they mature which provides a wonderful backdrop to it’s fragrant deep crimson coloured flowers. In late Spring prominent golden anthers emerge which act as a magnet to butterflies and other beneficial insects to the garden. As the flowers fade, edible green fruits appear which then maturing to a golden yellow colour, often used to produce preserves in the Autumn. Superb addition to any garden, suitable for growing against a wall/fence, within the mixed border or a low flowering hedge, its spiny branches providing a suitable deterrent to any unwanted visitors to the garden.
Looking After Your Chaenomeles x superba Crimson and Gold
Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow deciduous flowering shrub in many if not all locations. A low maintenance shrub which can benefit from a sunny or partially shaded area in all types of garden from the more informal cottage planting scheme to the town/city garden. Plant in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil, applying a good quality general purpose fertiliser early Spring to promote strong, fresh new growth in the coming season. Any light pruning is best done after flowering, but any hard pruning to remove damaged or crowded branches should be done in Winter during the dormant season and before any buds are formed, removing completely cutting back close to the trunk.
