Chaenomeles Toyo Nishiki, commonly known as the ‘Japanese Quince’  is a medium sized deciduous shrub.  It has dark green oval leaves and beautifully fragranced pink and white flowers which appear in Spring.  These are then closely followed by edible green fruit which turn to golden yellow when matured towards Autumn.  The fruit is very bitter if eaten raw but makes delicious preserves or jellies when cooked.

Chaenomeles Toyo Nishiki, also known as the ‘Japanese Quince’, is a stunning ornamental plant that is known for its striking, beautifully fragranced pink and white flowers. The plant is a deciduous shrub that typically grows to a height of 2.5 metre and it is an ideal choice for gardeners looking to add a pop of colour to their landscape. The flowers of the Toyo Nishiki bloom in the Spring, before the leaves have fully emerged. These are then closely followed by edible green fruit which turn to golden yellow when matured towards Autumn.  The fruit is very bitter if eaten raw but makes delicious preserves or jellies when cooked.

How to care for your Chaenomeles Toyo Nishiki

  1. Planting: Should be planted in well-drained soil in a location that receives full sun or partial shade.
  2. Watering: Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. However, it should be watered regularly during its first growing season to help it establish a deep root system.
  3. Pruning: Prune after it has finished flowering to remove any dead or damaged branches. This will also encourage the development of new growth.
  4. Fertilising: Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in the Spring to promote healthy growth.
  5. Winter Care: It is hardy and can tolerate frost, but a heavy frost or freeze may cause damage to the branches or flowers. If you live in an area with particularly harsh winters, you may want to protect the plant with a thick layer of mulch or by covering it with burlap.

By following these simple care tips, you can ensure that your Chaenomeles Toyo Nishiki will thrive and bring beauty to your landscape for years to come.
