Chaenomeles Speciosa Nivalis is commonly known as the ‘Flowering Japanese Quince’. It is an upright deciduous garden shrub and the small, obovate mid green leaves provide a contrasting backdrop to the clusters of pure white flowers which have prominent creamy anthers. It is a welcoming site after the winter months with the nectar rich flowers providing an early feed to many of the beneficial insects visiting the garden. As the flowers begin to fade they are replaced with aromatic, egg shaped, edible fruits, which although very bitter if eaten straight from the plant, make a very tasty preserve or jelly once cooked. Often seen growing against a wall or fence to brighten up that typically dull area in the garden. Equally, this plant works as an informal hedge as their spiny stems make a very effective deterrent to any unwanted visitors to the garden.
Looking After Your Chaenomeles Speciosa Nivalis
The Chaenomeles Nivalis is generally pest and disease free, although it may be affected by some scale insects and aphids. It is an easy to grow flowering garden shrub in many, if not all locations. Best of all, it is a low maintenance shrub which can benefit from a sunny or partially shaded area in most types of garden. The sunnier the aspect, the more abundant the flowers. Plant in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil, applying a good quality general purpose fertiliser during early Spring to promote strong, fresh new growth for the coming season.
