Cestrum Illnacullin, also known as ‘West Indian Butterfly flower’ is a hybrid evergreen shrub that is a cross between Cestrum Parqui and Cestrum Aurantiacum. This hybrid is known for its profuse clusters of tubular-shaped, highly fragrant flowers that bloom in shades of deep reds, typically in Summer. The shrub can reach up to 1.5 metres tall and wide, making it a great option for landscaping and backyard gardens.

In terms of landscape design, it is a great option for adding colour and fragrance to your garden. Its attractive red flowers and glossy green foliage makes it a great option for mixed borders, beds, and as a hedge. Its strong sweet fragrance makes it ideal for planting near pathways and seating areas.

How to care for your Cestrum Illnacullin

  1. Planting: Prefers well-draining soil and full sun. When planting, make sure to dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Backfill the hole with the removed soil and water thoroughly.
  2. Watering: Water the shrub regularly during the first growing season after planting to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant, but during prolonged dry spells, it is beneficial to give it a deep watering.
  3. Pruning: Prune the shrub to remove dead or diseased wood and to shape the shrub. It is best to prune the shrub while it is still dormant.
  4. Fertilising: Fertilising is not necessary, but if the soil is poor, you can apply a balanced fertiliser in the Spring.
  5. Overwintering: It is frost hardy down to -5˚C so will need Winter protection in colder temperatures.

By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your Cestrum Illnacullin will thrive and bring a beautiful red flowering shrub with a strong sweet fragrance to your garden.
