Cestrum Cretan Purple, also known as ‘Bastard Jasmine’ is a cultivar of the Cestrum plant and is a fast-growing evergreen shrub that is native to the island of Crete in Greece. This cultivar is known for its profuse clusters of deep purple, tubular flowers that bloom in the Summer. The shrub can reach up to 1.5 metres tall and wide, making it a great option for landscaping and backyard gardens.

In terms of landscape design, this Cestrum is a great option for adding colour and texture to your garden. Its attractive deep purple flowers and glossy green foliage makes it a great option for mixed borders, beds, and as a hedge. It’s also an attractive shrub for cottage and tropical gardens.

It prefers well-draining soil and full sun exposure. It is also drought-tolerant and can handle frost and cold temperatures down to -5˚C. This makes it a great choice for gardeners in a wide range of climates but may need Winter protection in temperatures colder than this.

How to care for your Cestrum Cretan Purple

  1. Planting: Prefers well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade exposure. When planting, make sure to dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Backfill the hole with the removed soil and water thoroughly.
  2. Watering: Water the shrub regularly during the first growing season after planting to establish a strong root system. Once established, Cretan Purple Cestrum is relatively drought tolerant, but during prolonged dry spells, it is beneficial to give it a deep watering.
  3. Pruning: Prune the shrub to remove dead or diseased wood and to shape the shrub. It is best to prune the shrub while it is still dormant.
  4. Fertilising: Fertilising is not necessary, but if the soil is poor, you can apply a balanced fertiliser in the Spring.
  5. Overwintering: It is hardy and can handle frost and cold temperatures down to -5˚C so it is recommended to mulch around the base of the shrub to protect the roots from freezing in temperatures less than this.

By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your Cretan Purple Cestrum will thrive and bring a beautiful deep purple flowering shrub to your garden.
