Cercidiphyllum Japonica which is also known as the ‘Katsura Tree’, ‘Candy-Floss’ or ‘Caramel Tree’ and recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit is a medium sized, deciduous flowering tree. It’s beautiful heart shaped leaves emerge bronze-tinted in Spring and quickly change to green and then as Autumn approaches changes through various shades of yellow, purple and red. As the leaves fall they emit a sweet scent often described as candy-floss, burnt sugar or caramel. Although insignificant, small red flowers which can be male or female are produced during Spring and before the leaves appear.
Looking After Your Cercidiphyllum Japonica
Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow ornamental small tree in many if not all locations. It is a low maintenance plant which will benefit from a sunny or partially shaded, sheltered position, in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil. Suitable in all types of garden from cottage planting schemes to town or court-yard gardens. Very little pruning is required and any removal of damaged or unwanted branches should be done late Autumn/Winter during the dormant season. Use of a good quality multi-purpose fertiliser early Spring will promote strong, healthy growth.
