Looking after Your Blechnum Spicant
Generally pest and disease free, although may be troubled by slugs, snails or caterpillars. Ferns are moisture loving plants preferring a shady position within the garden, if grown in sunnier aspects keeping the soil moist at all times is a must to maintain its healthy green colouring. Plant in a humus rich soil, in late Autumn tidy by removing any dead or dying fronds and mulch well using a well rotted garden compost leaf mould, this will also help to protect the roots from the colder Winter months. Early Spring apply a feed of bone meal or good quality general purpose fertiliser. Propagation by division or relocation can also be done early Spring.
