Berberis X Frikartii Amstelveen, also known as ‘Barberry Amstelveen and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a hardy, compact and dense, arching, evergreen shrub with long shoots which bear long, glossy, dark green spiny leaves, some of which turn red with contrasting white undersides towards Autumn as the weather gets colder, this small plant is ideal for the smaller garden where it could also be used as an informal low, prickly hedge, excellent for deterring any unwelcome intruders to the garden.  During Spring  masses of yellow flowers appear, followed  towards the autumn with glaucous blue / black berries.

Looking After Your Berberis Amstelveen

This tough, resilient shrub is easy to grow in many if not all locations, low maintenance and generally pest and disease free, preferring a fertile, moist, well drained soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position in all types of garden from cottage planting schemes to town or coastal areas. Very little pruning is required, although a gentle clip to retain its shape and remove any damaged or unwanted branches may be done in the Autumn or after flowering. Use a good quality general purpose fertiliser in the Spring to encourage strong, healthy growth for the coming season.
