Berberis Harlequin, commonly known as ‘Barberry’, and holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, is an eye catching, compact deciduous shrub with its distinctive rounded deep purple leaves which are splashed with cream and pink, become a much brighter red towards the Autumn. The small clusters of yellow flowers emerge from maroon buds in the Spring and are later followed by shiny dark red berries in the Autumn. Ideal for shrub borders, informal plantings or as a hedge or screen.
Looking After Your Berberis Harlequin
This colourful barberry is generally a very low maintenance plant with clipping or light pruning best done in the Autumn, which will help to keep the fresh leaf colouring for the following years growth. Grows well in full sun or partial shade and will tolerate most conditions. A good moist, but free draining, fertile soil will keep your Berberis looking its best through-out the Summer months.
