Astilbe Rheinland, also known as ‘False Goats Beard’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden merit, a dwarf, clump forming, deciduous perennial, with deeply divided, almost fern-like foliage through which erect flower spikes and plume-like rose/pink flower heads are formed during June and July and which continue to provide interest towards the Winter months when left on the plant. Both moisture and shade loving, an ideal candidate for the pond-side planting scheme or border, a magnet for bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects with its nectar rich flowers.
Looking After Your Astilbe Rheinland
Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow low maintenance plant preferring a moist, humus rich soil in a light to moderately shady area of the garden. Late Autumn provide a good mulch of well rotted garden compost, covering any exposed crowns. During early Spring remove any dead flower heads/leaves, this is also a good time to propagate by division or re-locate to a new site. Apply a good quality general purpose fertiliser to help encourage strong, fresh new growth.
