Astilbe Fanal, commonly known as ‘False Goats Beard’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, is an attractive, hardy, herbaceous perennial, the mahogany red new foliage in Spring changing to green in Summer, through which erect stalks bearing plume-like bright red flowers appear from May to June, an ideal ground cover plant for the border or pond-side planting scheme.
Looking after Your Astilbe Fanal
Generally pest and disease free, a low maintenance and easy to grow flowering perennial, preferring a moist, humus rich soil. Late Autumn remove any dead or damaged foliage, apply a mulch of well rotted garden compost, ensuring any exposed crowns are covered. Early Spring is an ideal time to propagate by division or re-locate your Astilbe, and provide a good quality general purpose fertiliser to encourage strong, healthy, fresh new growth during the coming season.
