Ajuga Catlins Giant or Bugle as it is commonly known, a recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is an attractive evergreen perennial the glossy purple to brown leaves forming attractive rosettes from which the whorls of tiny blue – violet flowers arranged on spikes appear creating a striking effect when in full bloom from late Spring. Adaptable to both full sun or shade makes this perennial ideal for colourful ground cover in most areas of the garden, well suited to banks or slopes.
Looking After Your Ajuga Catlins Giant
Generally pest or disease free, although do keep an eye out for powdery mildew, an easy to grow perennial in many if not all locations. A low maintenance plant which is adaptable to both full sun or shade, in all types of garden from the informal cottage planting scheme to town/court-yard gardens requiring very little pruning, after flowering clip to remove any spent flower spikes, this can also be done using a mower. Early Spring apply a good general purpose fertilizer to encourage new, fresh growth for the coming season. Propagation by division to increase stock or control spreading can also be done early Spring.
