Taxus Baccata, also known as the ‘Common Yew’ or ‘European Yew’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is an evergreen tree or shrub that is native to Western, Central, Southern Europe, and North Africa. It is known for its dark green needles, red berries, and long lifespan.

This Taxus is highly valued for its ornamental and ecological value. It is a popular choice for hedges, topiary, and as an accent in gardens. The tree can live for several hundred years and is tolerant of different soil types and conditions. Its dense foliage provides good privacy and windbreak. The tree is also tolerant of pruning, making it a great choice for topiary and hedging.

The history of Taxus Baccata can be traced back to ancient times, where it was considered a sacred tree by many cultures. It was often planted in graveyards and sacred groves. In the Middle Ages, it was used for making longbows and was also used for hedgerows.

How to care for your Taxus Baccata

  1. Planting: Prefers well-drained, acidic soil in partial to full shade.
  2. Watering: Relatively drought-tolerant once established, but it is important to water the tree regularly during its first growing season to help it become established. In general, it is a good idea to water the tree once a week if there is no significant rainfall.
  3. Pruning: Prune in late Winter or early Spring, before new growth appears. This will help to maintain the tree’s shape and encourage healthy new growth. Remove any dead, damaged or diseased wood, and thin out the interior of the tree to promote good air circulation.
  4. Fertilising: It does not require heavy fertilisation to thrive. A balanced, slow-release fertiliser applied in the Spring will be sufficient to keep the tree healthy and vigorous.
