Prunus Lusitanica, commonly known as the ‘Portuguese Laurel’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is an evergreen shrub that is popular for its attractive foliage, fragrant flowers, and versatility in a range of growing conditions. This plant features glossy, dark green leaves that are lance-shaped and grow up to 12cm long. Prunus Lusitanica can grow higher than 12 metres tall and 8 metres wide, but can be maintained at a smaller size through pruning. It produces fragrant white flowers in late Spring to early Summer, followed by red berries that are popular with birds. It prefers well-draining soil and partial shade to full sun, and is hardy down to temperatures of -15˚C.

Prunus Lusitanica requires little maintenance once established, but can benefit from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and size. It can be used as a hedge, screen, or accent plant, and is resistant to most pests and diseases.  By following our tips you can ensure that your Prunus Lusitanica thrives in your garden, providing year-round beauty and interest.

How to care for your Prunus Lusitanica

  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Avoid planting in soil that is too wet, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Watering: The plant requires regular watering, especially during hot and dry weather. However, it is important not to overwater, as this can also lead to root rot. Aim for soil that is moist, but not waterlogged.
  • Fertiliser: It can benefit from occasional fertilisation. Use a slow-release fertiliser in the Spring and again in the Autumn to promote healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Prune the shrub in late Winter or early Spring before new growth begins to maintain its desired shape and size. Remove any dead or diseased branches as well as any crossing branches to improve airflow within the plant.
  • Sunlight: Thrives in partial shade to full sun. Avoid planting in areas with too much shade, as this can lead to poor growth and disease.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or bark, around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your Prunus Lusitanica thrives in your garden, providing year-round beauty and interest.
