Phormium Tenax, also known as New Zealand Flax is a clump forming evergreen perennial which provides all year round colour for the garden. The sword-like arching dark green foliage make it an excellent accent plant within the border and during the long hot Summers, panicles of tubular shaped red flowers are produced on tall stiff spikes which tower above the bold green foliage.

Looking After Your Phormium Tenax

Generally pest and disease free, a low maintenance and easy to grow evergreen garden shrub in many if not all locations, from the informal cottage garden planting schemes to the more formal town/city or coastal gardens, preferring a sunny or partially shaded area of the garden away from any very cold, drying Winter winds.  Although generally maintenance free, you will need to remove any dead or damaged leaves in late Spring, also provide a good mulch of well rotted garden compost to help retain some moisture during the drier Summer months and apply a good quality general purpose fertiliser to stimulate plenty of fresh new growth.
