Hydrangea Sanguine, commonly known as the ‘Red Hydrangea’, is a stunning deciduous shrub celebrated for its unique and vibrant floral display. Belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family, this cultivar captivates with its large, showy flower clusters and lush foliage, making it a cherished addition to gardens and landscapes.

The defining feature of this Hydrangea is its magnificent blooms, which emerge in Summer and transition through a spectrum of hues, ranging from deep crimson to rich burgundy. Each flower cluster is composed of numerous individual florets, creating a striking pom-pom-like appearance that commands attention in the garden. The intense coloration of the blooms adds drama and depth to outdoor spaces, creating a captivating focal point.

In addition to its stunning flowers, it also boasts lush green foliage that provides an attractive backdrop to the vibrant blooms. The leaves are large, serrated, and prominently veined, adding texture and visual interest to the shrub throughout the growing season.

This cultivar typically forms a compact, rounded shape, reaching a height and spread of around 1 – 1.5 metres, making it an ideal choice for borders, mass plantings, or mixed shrub borders. Its moderate size also makes it suitable for container gardening, allowing gardeners to enjoy its beauty on patios, decks, or balconies.

How to care for your Hydrangea Merveille Sanguine

  • Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives partial shade to full sun. While it can tolerate some shade, it typically produces the most vibrant blooms in partial sunlight.
  • Soil: Ensure the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Hydrangea sanguinea prefers moist, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Amending the soil with compost or organic matter can improve fertility and drainage.
  • Watering: Water the shrub regularly, especially during the growing season and dry spells. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering is preferable to shallow watering, as it encourages deep root growth.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or compost, around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Maintain a mulch layer of about 2-3 inches, keeping it away from the stem to prevent rot.
  • Fertilisation: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for flowering shrubs in Spring, just as new growth begins. Avoid fertilisers high in Nitrogen, as they can promote excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
  • Pruning: Prune the shrub lightly after flowering to remove spent blooms and encourage new growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as this Hydrangea blooms on old wood. Pruning can be done in late Summer or early Autumn, once flowering has finished.
  • Protection from Frost: In colder climates, protect from frost damage by covering it with a frost cloth or providing additional insulation around the base of the plant. Mulching can also help protect the roots from freezing temperatures.

By following these care guidelines, you can ensure that your Hydrangea Sanguine remains healthy, vibrant, and a stunning focal point in your garden, providing beauty, drama, and elegance throughout the growing season.
