Philadelphus Beauclerk, commonly known as ‘Mock Orange’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. It is native to China and was introduced to the western world in the 18th century as an ornamental plant. The shrub is named after Topham Beauclerk, a prominent English politician and patron of botany in the 18th century.

It is a large, multi-stemmed shrub that can grow up to 3 metres tall and wide. It has an upright, arching habit and produces dense, rounded clusters of fragrant, white flowers in late Spring to early Summer. The flowers are cup-shaped with five petals and measure up to 5 cm in diameter. They have a sweet, citrus-like scent that is most prominent in the early morning and evening.

The leaves of the Philadelphus Beauclerk are dark green, oval-shaped, and have a pointed tip. They are arranged in an opposite pattern along the stems and measure up to 10 cm long. In the Autumn, the leaves turn a yellowish-green colour before dropping off for the Winter.

In summary, Philadelphus Beauclerk is a beautiful and fragrant deciduous shrub that produces clusters of white flowers in late spring to early summer. It is adaptable to a range of soil types and growing conditions, making it a versatile addition to any garden. With its low-maintenance nature and attractive habit, it is a great choice for both novice and experienced gardeners alike.

How to care for your Philadelphus Beauclerk

  • Sun and Soil Requirements: Prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. It grows best in full sun to partial shade, although it prefers some afternoon shade in hot climates.
  • Watering: This shrub is relatively drought-tolerant, but it requires regular watering during periods of extended dryness. Water deeply and infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  • Fertilisation: Does not require regular fertilisation, but a light application of a balanced fertiliser in early Spring can help promote healthy growth and flowering.
  • Pruning: Pruning is not necessary for the health of the plant, but it can help promote a more compact and bushy habit. Prune after flowering, removing any dead or damaged wood and any crossing or overcrowded branches.
  • Winter Care: It is hardy and can survive in colder climates. However, it may benefit from a layer of mulch to protect the roots during the Winter months.
  • Propagation: It can be propagated by softwood cuttings taken in late Spring or early Summer. Dip the cuttings in rooting hormone and plant in well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until the cuttings have rooted.

By following these simple care instructions, you can ensure that your Philadelphus Beauclerk remains healthy, vibrant, and attractive year-round.
