Melianthus major, also known as ‘Honey Bush’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a striking and unique shrub that is native to South Africa. This evergreen plant is prized for its showy, grey green foliage that has a distinctive appearance. The leaves have a strong fragrance that is particularly noticeable when the plant is crushed or brushed against.

In Spring, it produces spikes of beautiful, maroon coloured flowers that are highly fragrant and attract a wide variety of pollinators. These flowers are surrounded by long, feathery bracts that add even more interest to the plant.

Melianthus Major is an average growing plant, but once established, it can reach a height of 2.5 metres and a spread of about the same. This plant is perfect for use in large, mixed borders or as a focal point in a woodland or wildflower garden. It can also be grown in containers and trained as a specimen plant in a conservatory or greenhouse.

How to care for your Melianthus Major

  • Light: This plant prefers full sun, but it can tolerate a wide range of light conditions.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. If your soil is heavy or poorly draining, amend it with compost or sand to improve the drainage.
  • Watering: This plant is drought-tolerant and can be quite forgiving of neglect, but it does appreciate occasional watering during dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Fertilising: Does not require regular fertilising, but a light application of slow-release fertiliser in the Spring can help promote healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Pruning is not necessary for this plant, but if you want to control its size, you can cut it back in late Winter or early Spring, before new growth begins.
  • Propagation: This plant can be propagated by seed or by taking stem cuttings in the spring.

By following these simple care instructions, you can help ensure that your Melianthus Major thrives and provides years of beauty and fragrance in your garden.
