Lythrum Salicaria Blush, also known as ‘Purple Loosestrife’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a moisture loving perennial with strikingly beautiful light pink flowers that bloom during the Summer months. The plant features a tall and upright growth habit, reaching a height of 1 metre and a spread of 50 cm. The lance-shaped leaves are dark green in colour and arranged in whorls along the stem.  The blooms have a star-like shape with six petals and have a delicate and feathery appearance due to their fine stamens which give them a wispy, ethereal quality. They attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to the garden.

This plant is primarily grown as an ornamental plant for its beautiful blooms, and it is suitable for borders, cottage gardens, and wildflower meadows. It also provides habitat and food for a variety of insects and birds.

How to care for your Lythrum Salicaria Blush

  • Soil : Prefers moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Make sure the soil doesn’t dry out, but at the same time, avoid waterlogging.
  • Sunlight : The plant thrives in full sun. Ensure it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day.
  • Watering: Needs regular watering, especially during the hot Summer months. Water the plant deeply, but avoid overwatering, as it may cause root rot.
  • Fertilisation: Fertilise the plant with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in the Spring when new growth appears.
  • Pruning: Prune the plant in the Spring to promote new growth and remove dead or damaged stems. You can also deadhead the flowers to encourage the plant to produce more blooms.
  • Propagation: You can propagate by division in the Spring. Divide the plant every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding and maintain its health.

By following these simple care tips, you can ensure that your Lythrum Salicaria Blush plant stays healthy and vibrant, and produces beautiful blooms year after year.
