Luma Apiculata

Luma Apiculata, also known as ‘Temu’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a flowering plant species that belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree or shrub that is native to South America, particularly Chile and Argentina. It is also commonly found in the Andes Mountains and the Patagonian region.

It can grow up to 12 metres tall, but it is usually seen growing as a shrub. The bark is reddish-brown and exfoliates in small flakes, revealing a smooth, greyish-brown bark underneath. The leaves are oval-shaped and have a glossy, dark green colour. The leaves also have a distinctive aroma when crushed, which is often described as a mix of eucalyptus and myrtle.

This Luma produces small, fragrant, white flowers that bloom in the Summer. After pollination, the flowers give rise to small, round fruits that are about 1 cm in diameter. The fruit is green when unripe and turns purple-black when mature.

Luma Apiculata has been used for various medicinal purposes by indigenous people of South America. The leaves and bark are used to treat respiratory problems, such as coughs, colds, and bronchitis. The essential oil has also been found to have antibacterial, anti fungal, and antioxidant properties.

How to care for your Luma Apiculata

• Sunlight and Soil: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, so ensure that it is planted in an area that receives plenty of sunlight. The soil should be well-drained, fertile, and slightly acidic.
• Watering: Water the plant regularly during the first year after planting to help establish the root system. Afterward, it is drought-tolerant and does not require regular watering. However, it is important to ensure that the plant does not dry out completely, especially during prolonged periods of drought. A good rule of thumb is to water the plant deeply once a week during the growing season and reduce watering during the Winter months.
• Fertiliser: Does not require frequent fertilisation. However, you can apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser once a year in the Spring to encourage growth and improve overall health.
• Pruning: Does not require regular pruning but can benefit from an annual light trim in the early Spring to maintain its shape and encourage new growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches as soon as they appear.
• Mulching: Mulching can help retain moisture in the soil, suppress weed growth, and regulate soil temperature. Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or shredded leaves, around the base of the plant, making sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent moisture buildup.
• Winter Protection: In areas where temperatures drop below -10˚C it may require winter protection, especially when it is young.
