Itea Illicifolia, also known as ‘Holly-Leaved Sweet Spire’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a spreading evergreen shrub. This plant is known for its fragrant small greenish white flowers that bloom in the Summer, and its glossy green leaves that are holly-like in shape.
This Itea grows to a height of 4 metres and a spread of 2.5 metres, making it an excellent choice for a medium-sized specimen or for use in borders and woodland gardens. The delicate, bottlebrush-like flowers are held on long stems in Summer.
How to care for your Itea Illicifolia
- Planting: This plant grows best in moist, well-drained soils in a location with partial shade. Plant it in an area where it will receive morning sun and afternoon shade. When planting, be sure to allow enough room for it to grow to its full size.
- Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. During dry spells, you may need to water more frequently.
- Fertilising: It does not require regular fertilisation, but you can feed it once a year with a balanced fertiliser in the Spring.
- Pruning: Prune after it has finished flowering to maintain its shape and to encourage new growth. Cut back the previous year’s growth to within 5 to 7cms off the ground.
By following these care tips, you can help ensure that your Itea Illicifolia will thrive and produce beautiful, fragrant flowers for many years to come.
