Fuchsia Tom West, also known as ‘Hybrid Fuchsia’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is a hybrid variety of the popular flowering plant, Fuchsia. This particular cultivar is known for its large, vibrant blooms in shades of red and purple, which are held on long, pendulous stems. The history of Fuchsia Tom West is closely tied to the history of the Fuchsia plant itself.

Fuchsia, a genus of flowering plants in the family Onagraceae, was first discovered in the late 18th century by French missionary and botanist, Charles Plumier. The plant was named in honour of botanist Leonhart Fuchs, who lived in the 16th century. The Fuchsia plant quickly gained popularity in Europe, and by the 19th century, it had become a favourite among gardeners and horticulturists.

Fuchsia Tom West, was developed by hybridising two different fuchsia cultivars, it was launched in the market in the 21st century, and it quickly gained popularity among gardeners and horticulturists for its large blooms and beautiful colours. It is a versatile plant that can be grown in a variety of settings, including hanging baskets, patio containers, and as a specimen plant in the garden.

How to care for your Fuchsia Tom West

  1. Light: It prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much sun can cause the leaves to burn.
  2. Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering. In the winter, reduce watering.
  3. Soil: It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Use a mixture of peat moss and perlite for optimal drainage.
  4. Fertiliser: Benefits from regular fertilisation during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every two to four weeks.
  5. Pruning: Prune regularly to encourage bushier growth and prevent legginess. Pinch back the tips of the stems to promote branching.

By following these tips, you can help your Fuchsia Tom West thrive and enjoy its beautiful flowers for many seasons to come.
