Fargesia Rufa, also known as the’Fountain Bamboo’, is a beautiful and hardy bamboo species that is native to the mountains of western China. It’s a clumping bamboo, meaning it doesn’t spread aggressively like some other bamboo varieties. This makes it a great option for gardeners who want the beauty of bamboo without the worry of it taking over their garden.

Fargesia Rufa is known for its striking stems that turn a beautiful bronze colour as they mature. The leaves are green and glossy, and the plant can grow to be about 4 metres tall.

This bamboo is hardy and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and conditions, making it a great option for gardeners in many different climates. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, but can tolerate full sun as well. It’s also tolerant of drought, making it a great option for low-maintenance gardens.

This bamboo makes a marvellous specimen plant or for use as an informal hedge in light shade. Giant Panda Food!

How to care for your Fargesia Rufa

  1. Watering: It is drought tolerant and can survive with minimal watering. However, it’s important to make sure the soil stays consistently moist, especially during the first year after planting. Once established, the plant can survive with less water.
  2. Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, consider amending it with organic matter to improve drainage.
  3. Sunlight: Prefers partial shade, but can tolerate full sun as well. If you live in a hot climate, it’s best to provide some afternoon shade to protect the plant from the sun.
  4. Fertiliser: It does not require regular fertilisation. If you want to give it an extra boost, you can feed it with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser once a year in the Spring.
  5. Pruning: Does not require regular pruning, but you can trim away any dead or damaged culms as needed. It’s important to wear gloves and protective clothing when working with bamboo as the sap can cause skin irritation.
  6. Overwintering: It is hardy down to a temperature of -15˚C.

By following these tips, you can help ensure the health and growth of your Fargesia Rufa and enjoy it for years to come.
