Eucryphia Rostrevor is a graceful, semi-evergreen to evergreen tree or large shrub, valued for its elegant form and long-lasting summer flowers. It is particularly prized for its ability to bring colour and structure to gardens during the late Summer months, when many other plants have finished blooming.
From late Summer to Autumn it produces an abundance of large, pure white, cup-shaped flowers, each with a prominent boss of golden stamens at the centre. These fragrant blooms are highly attractive to bees and pollinators, making it a great choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. Its glossy, dark green foliage stays attractive year-round in milder parts of the UK, offering evergreen interest and a lush, refined appearance.
How to care for your Eucryphia Rostrevor
-
Planting Location
Plant in a sheltered spot, where it is protected from cold, drying winds. It prefers a position in full sun or light dappled shade, which will encourage the best flowering. Make sure you give it enough space, as it grows tall and upright, making it ideal as a feature tree or in a large border. -
Soil
This plant grows best in fertile, well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic. Avoid planting it in chalky or alkaline soils, which may cause the leaves to turn yellow. Before planting, it’s a good idea to improve the soil by adding compost or organic matter to help with drainage and nutrition. -
Watering
Water regularly during the first few years while the plant is establishing. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid letting it become waterlogged. Once the tree is mature, it will tolerate short dry periods but will benefit from extra watering during long dry spells. -
Feeding
In early spring, feed with a balanced, general-purpose fertiliser to promote healthy growth and flowering. Each year, add a mulch of compost or leaf mould around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and improve soil quality. -
Pruning
Requires very little pruning. In late Winter or early Spring, you can remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to keep the plant tidy and healthy. Light trimming after flowering is fine if you need to shape it, but avoid cutting back too hard. -
Winter Care
In colder areas, protect the roots by applying a thick mulch around the base in Autumn. Young plants may benefit from some extra protection during harsh winters, such as covering with horticultural fleece.
With minimal effort, Eucryphia Rostrevor will reward you with masses of elegant white flowers, glossy evergreen foliage, and strong architectural presence, making it a standout feature in any garden
