Chionanthus Retusus, commonly known as Chinese Fringe Tree, native to Eastern Asia, of upright, rounded habit, is a deciduous shrub or small tree, often multi-stemmed, it’s grey-brown bark becoming ridged and furrowed with age, the broad ovate shaped, leathery green leaves which when young have downy/white undersides, May-June fragrant, snowy white flowers appear in terminal clusters with fringe-like petals, these are later followed by bluish-black berries, highly sought after by the garden wild-life.

Looking After Your Chionanthus Retusus

Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow deciduous, ornamental garden tree in many if not all locations, a low maintenance plant which will benefit from a sunny or partially shaded position, in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil, taking care not to allow to dry out completely, and suited to all types of garden from cottage planting schemes to large town or court-yard gardens. Very little pruning is required, although any removal of damaged or unwanted branches should be done late Winter/early Spring during the dormant season.
